  10.  Conclusion

Are you confused and thinking, why is the price of the same LCD produced by different manufacturers so different?

Well, we’ll try to explain everything in this article; we need to know how to get a new LCD design before talking about the factors that influence LCD price.

When some companies want to make their new products, they need an LCD screen and custom designs for LCD.

First of all, they will have an idea about what they need from the following list:

  • LCD size
  • working temperature,
  • viewing angle,
  • connection types,
  • LCD frames,
  • need backlight or not,
  •  inner symbols, icons, etc.

1. What Are The Parts Of The LCD Screen?

Some of the components:

  • Diffuser
  • Polarizer
  • Color filter
  • Power supply. The power supply is responsible for supplying electric current to every component of an LCD screen.
  • Backlight
  • Inverter
  • The motherboard of the LCD screen
  • The array of liquid crystals

2. Different Companies Have Different Types Of Liquid Crystals.

Other companies produce various crystals determined by the different working ranges with very different costs. Different liquid crystals will determine the lifespan of LCDs and the working temperatures of LCDs.

3. Different Companies Use Different LCD Glass Materials

Different companies use different LCD glass materials that will lead to different costs. Different glasses for the liquid crystal display will also determine LCD’s lifespan. High-quality and better glasses can keep the LCD safe from scratches and damages.

4. Different Types Of Glue Used By Various Companies Will Lead To Different Costs For LCD

Glue is essential for the long life of the liquid crystal display. Different types of glue used by different companies will lead to different costs for LCD. Better glues can keep the LCDs having a longer lifespan too. And It keeps the LCD stronger, or it will help the LCDs not easily break. Remember that worse glues may only work for 1 or 2 years and lose their functions.

5. Different Companies Add Different Kinds Of Polarizers.

Polarizers play an essential role in the price of liquid crystal displays as they will vary a lot so lead to different prices. That’s why different companies have different prices for their products. Remember, transmissive, transflective, and reflective LCDs use other polarizers from different companies. Reflective and transmissive are cheaper than transflective as it is expensive enough.

6. Different Display Types Will Have Big Price Differences.

The key part of the LCD screen is a display type because the display types will determine which kind of liquid crystal will be used. If we look from cheap to expensive is TN, HTN, STN, VA, FSTN(CSTN and DSTN are all FSTN, so we treat them as one kind). So if different companies will use STN instead of TN for the display, the price will be high ultimately.

7. Different Glass Thicknesses Cause The Different Prices

Generally speaking, glass thickness typically has three tiers of LCD, 1.7mm, 2.0mm, and 2.8mm. And the price from low to high is 2.8mm, 2.0mm, 1.7mm. Because producing the thinner display is the most difficult for the manufacturers, it will have a higher defective rate.

The 2.8mm is the most common thickness, the thinner, the more expensive it. Different companies will use them accordingly, and the price will vary from low to high.

8. Different Silk Printing Requirements Will Also Lead To Different Prices.

If you need different silk printing, it will cause different prices because one color silk printing is easy, then two colors than three colors and 4 and 5 and will cost you more if customers need different colors, the more expensive because it will be much more challenging to print different colors.

9. Some Other Factors Affect The Price Of Liquid Crystal Display.

Other factors like pin length and pin shapes etc., and particular size and special deals with edges of LCDs will cost much more.

Factors that influence the price of LCD:

And all these factors listed below are also the most critical factors that will influence the price of LCD. The important factors are the following:

  • Unit Price
  • MOQ (minimum order quantity)
  • Backlight
  • Tooling Fees

1. Unit Price

Usually, people have confused about the unit price of custom LCDs. But it’s easy to know the approximate cost of them.

Let’s talk about the factors that will affect the price.

  • Display Mode

Generally speaking, let’s take an example with the same size, same thickness LCD. The price from cheap to expensive is TN, HTN, STN, VA, FSTN, DFSTN because the viewing angle will be wider from TN to DFSTN.

  • Viewing Mode

Viewing modes include Transmissive, Transflective, Reflective.

Here we also treat other factors the same. Size, display mode. Temperature range, etc.

Reflective is cheapest, then transmissive, then transflective.

  • Temperature Range

Generally speaking, all companies divided temperature ranges into four tiers.

First, the working temperature is 0 to 50 degrees, and the storage temperature is -10 to 60 degrees.

Second, the working temperature is -10 to 60 degrees, and the storage temperature is -20 to 70 degrees.

Third, the working temperature is -20 to 70 degrees, and the storage temperature is -30 to 80 degrees.

Forth, the working temperature is -30 to 80 degrees, and the storage temperature is -40 to 90 degrees.

And it’s clear that the price is from low to high. Because the requirements for the liquid crystals are different, the higher and lower temperature you need, it will be more expensive.

2. COG or COB or LCD only

Why we talk about the LCD frame is because it’s an essential factor that influences price.

COG means chip on glass, and we need to get a suitable IC for it. Because the IC is on glass, it has more production processes requirements. So it will be expensive.

COB means chip on board, there is a lot of space for a big IC to drive the LCD, so the producing requirements are not that fierce.

LCD only is easy to understand the reason. Because we only need to produce the glass and bond the PINs or FPC or conductive tapes on it.

We don’t talk about COF because COF is commonly used in TFT screens. And here we talk about monochrome LCD only.

  • Segments It Needs To Display

It is also easy to understand the meaning of the title. The more segments, the more liquid crystal materials are needed, and the more PINs are required. So under the same conditions, the more segments, the higher the price.

  • PINs

Actually, this part can be combined with the 5th point. More segments you need, more PINs you will need. Then the price will be higher.

  • LCD Size

LCD size is the most important factor that will influence the price of LCD. It’s easy to understand. The bigger it is, the more expensive it is.

3. MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity)

The reason why there will be MOQ should be explained in more detail.

First, making a new mould to make LCDs will change a whole production line for a new item. A production line includes more than 40 processes. And once it starts running. It will take a few minutes to adjust the whole production line and need to use raw materials to test the preciseness of the production line. It will cost a lot when starting production.

And once we changed the whole production line for a new item. It also takes some time to change the moulds. So it’s also a high cost for that.

4. Backlight

Typically, 90% of customers who need LCD will also need a backlight. Because only reflective LCDs don’t need a backlight.

There will also be a massive difference in the price of the backlight. Under normal circumstances, we divide the backlight into three types. The first very commonly used backlight is directly connected to the LCD and soldered on the motherboard. This backlight does not require a specific structure, and its size only needs to be designed according to the size of the LCD and PCB board. The second is the backlight that is attached to the LCD. Generally, we will help it design a wall so that the LCD and the backlight can be better fixed together so that the entire module structure can be more stable. The third is to add an iron frame to the second one, making the structure more stable and helping protect the LCD screen.

5. Tooling Fees

And the tooling fee also has significant differences between the different kinds of LCD and backlights you need.

Tooling fee for LCD from cheap to expensive is TN, HTN, STN, VA, FSTN, DFSTN.

Tooling fee for backlight from cheap to expensive as discussed, the more complex the frame is, the more expensive it will be.

And tooling fee for PCB board. The more extensive and more complex it is, the tooling fee will be higher.

10. Conclusion

The price of different companies can be different because of varying liquid crystals, different LCD glass, different diffuser films. Moreover, different compensation films and pin assignments can use bad bronze. FPC can use inventories or not-good bronze materials. Conductive tapes can also be different, and the material will determine the conductivity. Backlight can be different because of different LED beads, compensation film, and Light guide plate material.
