  • Reflective LCD 

It does not have a backlight because its bottom film does not transmit light and the contents on the screen can only be seen with the external light source.

  • Transflective LCD 

It is a combination of both transmissive and reflective technologies so it can be used without backlight or with backlight.

If there are so many icons and symbols in the LCD, we will choose FPC for it, then it will be a COF frame. Because it needs an extra IC to drive.

If the IC is on the board, there will be so many ways for the connection. PIN assignment, conductive tape, or FPC all can be. (Yes, FPC also can be, because the FPC can be treated as a flexible way for the frame, and IC can be on the board, FPC as an extended part of the connection.)


7. What Level Of Backlight Brightness Do You Need?

If the thickness is fixed, then another way to increase the brightness is to increase the size of the backlight so that more lamp beads can be added.

1. What Are The Components Of The Segment LCD Module?

A seven-segment display is electronic display equipment for presenting decimal numerals that is an option to the more complex dot matrix displays.

The segment LCD module is composed of:

The PCB board is mainly composed of:

5. The Way That LCD And Backlight Combine With PCB Board 

LCD panels usually use thinly-coated metallic conductive pathways on a glass substrate to form the cell circuitry to control the panel. It is generally impossible to use soldering techniques to connect the panel to a separate copper-etched circuit board directly. Instead, interfacing is achieved using anisotropic conductive film or, for beneath densities, elastomeric connectors.

LCD has two upper and lower glass, so there is usually a crystal filling port on the left or right side, and this crystal filling port will be sealed with glue. At the same time, this mouth also needs to avoid being bumped. So generally, the backlight will add an extra 1 mm to protect the seal. In addition, the minimum shading area of the backlight is 7mm. Therefore, the size of the backlight is generally 8mm longer than that of the LCD.

Generally speaking, let’s take an example with the same size, same thickness LCD. The price from cheap to expensive is TN, HTN, STN, VA, FSTN, DFSTN because the viewing angle will be wider from TN to DFSTN.

  • Viewing Mode

Viewing modes include Transmissive, Transflective, Reflective.

Here we also treat other factors the same. Size, display mode. Temperature range, etc.

Reflective is cheapest, then transmissive, then transflective.

  • Temperature Range

Generally speaking, all companies divided temperature ranges into four tiers.

First, the working temperature is 0 to 50 degrees, and the storage temperature is -10 to 60 degrees.

Second, the working temperature is -10 to 60 degrees, and the storage temperature is -20 to 70 degrees.

COB means chip on board, there is a lot of space for a big IC to drive the LCD, so the producing requirements are not that fierce.

LCD only is easy to understand the reason. Because we only need to produce the glass and bond the PINs or FPC or conductive tapes on it.

We don’t talk about COF because COF is commonly used in TFT screens. And here we talk about monochrome LCD only.

  • Segments It Needs To Display

It is also easy to understand the meaning of the title. The more segments, the more liquid crystal materials are needed, and the more PINs are required. So under the same conditions, the more segments, the higher the price.

  • PINs

Actually, this part can be combined with the 5th point. More segments you need, more PINs you will need. Then the price will be higher.

  • LCD Size

LCD size is the most important factor that will influence the price of LCD. It’s easy to understand. The bigger it is, the more expensive it is.

3. MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity)

First, making a new mould to make LCDs will change a whole production line for a new item. A production line includes more than 40 processes. And once it starts running. It will take a few minutes to adjust the whole production line and need to use raw materials to test the preciseness of the production line. It will cost a lot when starting production.

Typically, 90% of customers who need LCD will also need a backlight. Because only reflective LCDs don’t need a backlight.

The first very commonly used backlight is directly connected to the LCD and soldered on the motherboard. This backlight does not require a specific structure, and its size only needs to be designed according to the size of the LCD and PCB board. The second is the backlight that is attached to the LCD. The third is to add an iron frame to the second one, making the structure more stable and helping protect the LCD screen.
