Are you confused about how to choose a standard vs. custom LCD module for your use?

No need to worry now. Today in this article, I’ll explain everything about how you can choose the best LCD module according to your need. When considering a display module for your project, you will have to answer: “Should I design a standard module or customized one for my use?”  This article has described some tips, common misconceptions, and detailed answers to common questions to help you choose the best one.

1. Common Misconceptions About LCD

Here are some common misconceptions about LCD you kneed to know before your final decision.

  •  Custom LCD Modules Are Costly.

The common misconception is that custom display modules cost more than standard modules.

While the above holds for NRE cost, custom LCD module unit pricing is often equivalent to or lower than a similar product.

Here’s why: Standard display modules are often designed to maximize their implementation potential.

This can lead to:

  1. variable interface protocols allowed by high pin counts,
  2. high-output backlighting to maximize application potential,
  3. Generally conservative mechanical design practices.
  • Custom NRE Costs Are Too Restrictive.

For most Passive Matrix LCD modules, we can deliver a custom LCD with active area size and resolution or a custom backlight, mechanical housing, and electrical interface for a total NRE cost of less than USD 10k. Likewise, Createxplay can customize an Active Matrix LCD module’s backlight, housing, and mechanical interface for an NRE cost of less than USD 10k.

In these cases, the design flexibility justifies the modest NRE required that customization often allows.

However, customizing the Active Matrix LCD itself (size/resolution) can cost restrictive for most applications since the minimum NRE required for panel mask sets is around USD 100k. Unless the scope of the business dictates a customer-owned TFT panel or the project volumes depending on the size, are over 500k pieces per year. In many applications, combining a standard active matrix TFT cell with a custom-designed module and electrical interface offers the most favorable overall cost solution.

  • Designing Custom Modules Extend Lead Time.

The lead time is another consideration for a custom design that can be shorter than you would think. Short lead time is made off-the-shelf LCD modules attractive for designers.

LCD manufacturers like Createxplay can typically design custom housing for passive or active matrix LCDs – with integrated capacitive touch sensor and interface – within one to two weeks of the initial RFQ and then provide sample custom LCD modules 4-5wks after that.

Createxplay also offers customers the option to use off-the-shelf modules as prototypes within their design before the custom display is ready to evaluate other design aspects and perform qualification work (e.g., testing software).

For many implementers, the design freedom and iterative optimization that customization offers are well worth the additional time required to sample custom LCD modules.

2. Advantages of Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)

There are many advantages of Liquid crystal display that are listed below:

  • The LCD can produce over 60 inches or 150 cm diagonal in large sizes.
  • It has no geometric distortion.
  • It is very compact, thin, and has light CRT displays.
  • Magnetic fields do not affect it.
  • Small heat is emitted during operation due to low power consumption.
  • It is much thinner than a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitor.

3. Customized LCD

Nowadays, different LCDs are used in various applications, from calculators, watches, games to medical and industrial applications. The display content easily modified to satisfy the exact requirements of an application is one of the main advantages of LCDs over all other display technologies. The customized LCD panels can show particular user interface information that enhances the product performance and value.

Customized LCDs display alphanumeric digits, numeric, ON, or OFF indicators, graphic icons, messages, pie charts, bar graphs, symbols, etc. The content of the LCDs panel is limited only by the product designer’s imagination. Many factors should be considered in the design of a customized LCD panel.

4. Important Information To Design Custom LCD Panel

The following information is necessary to design a quotation for a customized LCD panel:

  • LCD panel,
  • Display modes,
  • Polarisers,
  • Viewing mode,
  • Backlight requirement,
  • Operating environment,
  • Drive method,
  • Connection method,
  • A keypad is required if applicable.

5. Advantages Of Custom LCD

  • Custom LCD monitors display static images with full-color detail from computer sources extremely well and no screen burn-in.
  • The number of pixels/square inches on an LCD is typically higher than other display technologies.
  • Custom LCD monitors are good at displaying a large amount of data, e.g., on an Excel spreadsheet with exceptional clarity and precision.
  • Custom LCDs are available in many sizes.
  • They are not affected by increased or decreased air pressure in airplanes.
  • Custom LCD technology is not prone to ghosting or screen burn-in.
  • Custom LCD televisions require less power to operate than a plasma TV.
  • Generally, LCD monitors are better for public display, such as airport and retail store signage, due to the bright room light environment.
  • Portable test equipment
  • Diagnostic device
  • Electric, water, gas meters
  • Telecom products
  • Measuring device
  • Marine equipment
  • Medical equipment
  • Automotive display

6. Disadvantages Of LCDs

  1. They suffer from a motion blur effect.
  2. The high refresh rate of LCD televisions can negatively affect the picture.
  3. LCD technology can change colors slightly as the backlight ages.

Do you want to know the important matters needing attention for the outdoor LCD display with causes and solutions?

This article will discuss them in detail with solutions for you.

As a new carrier of self-service to our life, outdoor LCD has brought great convenience. Outdoor LCD self-service can be seen everywhere in our life.

1. When It Comes To Outdoor LCD Display Hardware?

Outdoor LCDs become lighter, brighter, more efficient in power consumption, and have higher resolution every two to three years. To ensure investment efficiency, “everything should be based on actual needs and avoid blindly following the trend” has become the basic principle of end-users purchasing.

There are some important matters needing attention for outdoor LCD display:

2. Structure Design Of Outdoor LCD

Outdoor LCDs are generally large and very heavy. The home page needs to pay attention to the structure’s design for installing the outdoor touch screen display. Firstly, the installation structure should consider wind resistance, bearing capacity, earthquake resistance, and other major factors.

Secondly, the display screen should coordinate the structure, shape, and exterior decoration design with the architecture. Moreover, it considers local environmental factors, such as air humidity, air salinity content, etc.

3. Light Pollution Of Outdoor LCD

The popularity of LCDs has led to “light pollution. ”

Do LCDs count as “light pollution”?

The definition of light pollution is usually divided into three international categories: white light pollution, color light pollution, and artificial daylight pollution. Currently, only China has relevant regulations for the glass curtain wall in white light pollution but no relevant laws for artificial daylight and color light pollution. The display screen design has been regarded as the prevention and control of light pollution.

3.1 Proper Planning Of The Outdoor Area And Installation Location Of The Display Screen

You should choose an outdoor area and installation location of the display screen according to the viewing distance and angle of the surrounding environment, the display content requirements, and location.

3.2 Selection Of Display Content And Design

When choosing the display content, it must agree with the general requirements. The GUI design of the outdoor display screen should be dark-colored to avoid causing discomfort to users’ eyes. You need to make the color look soft color and transition natural.

3.3 The System Can Automatically Adjust The Brightness.

Different times and places of the brightness of the environment change greatly if the screen brightness is greater than the environment too much. It will cause people’s eyes not to adapt, especially since the brightness of the difference between the day and night is large. Our automatic brightness adjustment system drives light pollution; an automatic conversion is suitable for the air environment brightness and avoids light pollution.

Many outdoor LCD manufacturers have done a lot of work in the field of the outdoor display to enrich our visual space light up a better life to make a great contribution relative to the original TNT and other traditional display products; in recent years.

4. Top 5 Precautions For Installation Of Outdoor Display Screens

There are some precautions for the installation of the outdoor display screens, which are given below:

4.1 Lightning Protection Measures For The Installation Of Buildings And Screens

The display screen body and the protective layer of the outer packaging must be grounded to avoid strong electromagnetic lightning attacks. The grounding line’s resistance should be less than 3 ohms to timely discharge lightning from the ground wire.

4.2 Measures the Screen Body Waterproof, Dust And Moisture-Proof

The connection between the box body, the joint of the screen body, and the force installation object to avoid leakage and dampness should seamlessly connect. Inside the screen body, the situation can be dealt with in time to have good drainage and ventilation measures if there is water inside.

4.3 Choice Of Circuit Chips

In cold areas, the temperature in winter generally reaches minus ten degrees. When choosing the circuit chip, selecting the working temperature in the negative 40 degrees Celsius refers to 80 degrees Celsius of the industrial chip to avoid difficulty using LCD due to the low temperature.

4.4 Ventilation Measures Inside The Screen Body

A certain amount of heat will generate when the screen is powered on. If the heat cannot be discharged, it will get to a certain extent, which will cause the internal ambient temperature to be too high and affect the work of the integrated circuit. If heat cannot be discharged, it will burn down seriously, so the display can not operate. Therefore, the internal environment temperature is kept between negative 10 degrees and 40 degrees. It is necessary to do good ventilation and heat dissipation measures inside the screen body.

4.5 Highlight The Choice Of Wick

The high brightness LED backlight display can face direct sunlight and enhance the contrast with the surrounding environment. The audience of the picture is broader; in the distance, an overall perspective of the place still has a good performance.

5. Some Misunderstandings About Outdoor LCD Display Hardware Equipment

5.1 The Longer The Life, The Better

According to human inertia thinking, the longer the product’s service life, the better. This is no exception in purchasing outdoor LCDs, and this idea is not advisable. We should keep in mind that the longer the service life of outdoor displays, the higher the technical requirements. The related manufacturing costs will naturally increase, and the industry users will have to invest more money. Industry users will choose to use the product as long as possible to ensure the return on investment. Balance the use cost and application experience, users in the purchase of outdoor liquid crystal display should not blind foot pursuit of long life, according to the application needs.

5.2 The Brighter The Screen, The Better

Nowadays, highlighting has become an important parameter in outdoor liquid crystal displays, highlighting the leading technology. It is indefinite amplification in the marketing publicity by some manufacturers, which directly causes many users to produce serious highlighting properties. The screen is not as bright as possible; the effect of screen brightness is a superimposed effect, including the contrast, viewpoint, viewing distance, the brightness of the surrounding environment, content, and so on. Therefore, simply the pursuit of high brightness cannot necessarily achieve the best application effect, even having a negative impact. For instance, the higher the screen brightness, the heat generated, the consumed power will increase, the maintenance costs, and highlighting the high price of the product itself, to greatly increase the capital investment, does not fit the established economic principles. At the same time, in indoor applications, too bright a screen may cause discomfort to the eyes, thus affecting the audience’s viewing experience.

5.3 The Metal Casing Is Safer And More Practical

At present, many outdoor commercial displays will be equipped with metal cases. Under manufacturers’ guidance, many industry users have been convinced that metal cases are more secure. Unless the outdoor LCD is installed in a public space where people can tamper, the metal case becomes a completely unnecessary expense. For example, the elevator billboard in the office and the information displayed at the cash register in the back are almost inaccessible to outsiders, so they are very suitable for applying plastic cases.

5.4 The Smaller The Player, The Better

Out of the demand for beautiful design, many users prefer to choose small products, which is understandable but also moderate. The installation of compact player products is flexible, and it puts forward higher requirements for the cooling design, and once the cooling problem occurs, the results are unimaginable.

6. Final Words

The increase of technical threshold leads to the high cost and increases the potential risk of system application. After all, the liquid crystal display needs 7×24 hours of continuous operation. You can choose outdoor displays wisely. If you still have any questions, contact us.

  12.  Final Words

There are different types of cover glass with various advantages and disadvantages for protecting an LCD display.

The display cover is just as critical as the display itself when developing a new product. The actual display component normally does not receive any protection, leaving it sensitive to environmental factors and damage from continued use. Depending on product requirements, it is often necessary to add a glass cover to protect the display from scratches while maintaining optical quality. However, not all glass is made equal. The strength, cost, color options, and available thicknesses can influence which cover glass to use.

This article will discuss the options for choosing the best cover glass for your display and application.

1. Choosing a Cover Glass For Your Display

The top layer of a display screen module is a cover glass that acts as a protective layer to the internal display properties, allowing the liquid crystal to shine through it and create a visible image. Cover glass can be customized based on the intended display application and come in various materials and strengths of the material, which is usually correlated with scratch resistance.

Read More About Touchscreen Here

The strength of the cover glass is measured by the mineral hardness and determines the material’s scratch resistance. Glass, the standard material, has a 5-7 Mohs hardness rating used for LCD cover glass. Certain industrial and medical applications require a level 7 hardness rating as a safety glass.

LCD cover glass can be customized for any application, and customizations can include strengthening, waterproofing, temperature shielding, and optical enhancements. Different materials can be added to the glass substrate to strengthen the material and prevent scratching the surface. The cover glass also includes special features and printing options.

2. Cover Glass Material

The cover glass is made of a glass substrate or different glass substrates with unique strengths and material properties and strengthened to be more durable depending on the application.

The type of cover glass material used is up to the designer, and each glass type has different advantages, features, and prices that can be changed for the required application.

3. Heat Strengthened Glass

Heat tempered glass is a special process that involves heating the display glass to a liquid at a high temperature, strengthening the glass because the molecules get realigned into a stable pattern. Heat tempered glass heat-tempered glass is a different type of display glass and four times stronger than regular untreated glass.

Heat-treated glass and heat-tempered glass can still be broken in the right conditions, the heat-tempered glass will fragment or crack used in industries for its safety features, and heat-treated glass will break into large and sharp shards.

4. Chemically Strengthened Glass

Chemically strengthened glass is strengthened through chemical bonding; the glass is submerged in chemicals at high heat, enabling ions to bond to holes in the glass. The chemical process adds potassium bonds in the original sodium bonds during this chemical reaction strengthening the glass while maintaining the clarity of the glass. Chemically strengthened glass maintains optical clarity during the strengthening process and can be cut or drilled after treatment.

5. Glass Hardness Scale

The Mohs hardness scale defines the mineral’s scratch resistance and is a way to measure the hardness of a mineral. This is useful for describing the hardness of different LCD glasses typically measured at a hardness level of 5-7 Mohs to create scratch-resistant displays. Certain cover glass materials will have a larger hardness scale and thus be more scratch-resistant.

Soda Lime glass is chemically treated and is a great option for LCDs that do not require extra glass protection. A standard soda-lime glass for an LCD will have a hardness rated at about 5Mohs. This glass is not fragile and will have normal durability, but it is not rated as an extra-strength display glass.

Our cover Glass is chemically strengthened. It provides more damage resistance than standard untreated glass, common in portable electronic devices because it is thin and lightweight and can also be crack-resistant, ideal for handheld devices.

The hardness rating of Dragontrail glass is 7Mohs, which is equivalent to Gorilla Glass and is scratch resistant with this hardness rating. The Dragon glass is durable with a minimum thickness of 1.1mm.

6. Bonding Type

The cover glass is fixed to the LCD with tape or an OCA bonding material. OCA bonding is an optically clear bond applied in a thin layer of about 0.005″ -0.008″ around the bond line that holds the touch panel, cover glass, and LCD together. The adhesive is clear and will dry without staining the display’s glass and is good for delicate materials such as cover glass and touchscreens.

7. Optical Coatings

Special features and optical coatings on the display’s cover glass can provide moisture protection and dust prevention and increase the display’s durability. The optical coating acts as a protective layer to the display’s internal circuitry and liquid crystal and acts as an adhesive to prevent moisture or dust from entering the section. The cover glass can have an extra layer of protection with an optical coating. The optical coating can protect against external elements and recommend outdoor display applications. The sealing effect of the optical coating will protect the display from harsh conditions.

 8. Common Types of Cover Glass Material

Here are the most common types of cover glass used for display modules described below:

  • Soda-lime glass
  • Low-Iron soda-lime glass
  • Aluminosilicate glass

Read More About Cover Glass in detail here.

9. Soda-Lime Glass

Soda-lime glass, also known as soda-lime float glass, is the most frequently used glass in display modules. Soda Lime glass has the features of standard glass and is the most common material you typically see used in windows. This type of glass is strong and cost-efficient, and it can range in thickness like other glasses.

10. Low-Iron Soda Lime Glass

The same strength is slightly more expensive than conventional soda-lime float glass, and low iron soda-lime glass is more transparent and almost tint-free. This glass is commonly used as a cover for any product with a lighter white color around the display since there is no green hue to distort the coloring.

11. Aluminosilicate Glass

Aluminosilicate glass, commonly known as Gorilla Glass™ or Dragontrail™ glass.

  • Gorilla Glass

Gorilla Glass is a thin, lightweight, yet strong material. Gorilla Glass is scratch-resistant and damage resistant, and the typical applications for Gorilla Glass include smartwatches, smartphones, and tablets. Gorilla Glass can also be used for industrial and military applications where the display’s durability is essential.

  • Dragon Glass

Dragon glass is a type of cover glass treated with chemicals and heat to improve the strength of the material. The glass material is mixed with strengthening particles and heated to a liquid. This chemical and heat strengthening process makes this cover glass scratch-proof and durable. This cover glass is six times as strong as the standard soda-lime glass.

How To Select The Right Touchscreen Technology?

  1. What Is Touchscreen Technology?
  2. Multi-Touch Gestures
  3. Important things to consider when choosing a touchscreen technology
  4. What is the planned use of the device?
  5. Which touch features are required?
  6. How will the touchscreen be activated?
  7. What is the required environment to use touchscreen?
  8. What is the price point?
  9.  How many actuations does the touchscreen need to manage?
  10.  Final Words

Touchscreens grow in popularity as a part of user interface systems and become a critical design decision. Each type of touchscreen, resistive or projected capacitive, offers many advantages.

Do you want to know how to select the one that provides the optimal user experience from the wide variety of touchscreen options?

1. What Is Touchscreen Technology?

Traditional input devices for computer systems contain keyboards and mice. Touchscreen technology has become widely used to interact with computer systems and mobile devices.

A touchscreen is an electronic visual display that a user controls by touching the screen with fingers. A touchscreen allows more direct interaction with what is displayed than a mouse device. Touchscreens have become very common on smartphones, tablet computers, and other mobile devices. Additionally, standard laptops and desktop computers use touchscreen displays to use both touches and more traditional ways of input.

The first major successful technology was the resistive touchscreen, which uses a panel including two thin, electrically charged layers separated by a narrow space. These two layers touch by pressing the panel, and the location of the connection is recorded as the input. Resistive touchscreens are somewhat cheap and resistant to liquids, but they have relatively poor contrast, and you need to press them down with some pressure. Resistive touchscreens did not become widely used for computer systems but developed as part of other electronic systems. For instance, control panels in factories and the display screens used in restaurants to enter orders are resistive touchscreens.

The second major technology used in touchscreens is the capacitive touchscreen, which uses a layer of insulating material, such as glass, coated with a transparent conductor and touching the screen with your finger changes the screen’s electrostatic field. Several approaches can be used to record the location of the touch. Using a fine grid of capacitors is one of the most common ways to record the electrostatic field’s change.

2. Multi-Touch Gestures

Touchscreen technology works similar to a computer mouse at a basic level. Instead of moving your pointer with a mouse, press the location with your finger. Multi-touch technology makes it possible to interact with the computer display in many ways. With touchscreen technology, tasks like scrolling up and down a web page, selecting text and drag-and-drop have become quite different. This figure shows several single and multi-touch gestures.

Things To Consider When Choosing A Touchscreen Technology

There are some important things you need to know while choosing a touchscreen, which are given below.

3. What Is The Intended Use Of The Device?

The first step is to precisely define what the device will be used for and which touchscreens are feasible. For instance,

Is the screen intended for an inexpensive toy where durability is not a huge concern?

Will your display be for a military application, subject to harsh conditions?

Both situations require different durability, functionality, pricing, and input registration screen technologies. The next step is to figure out which functionalities are necessary once you have narrowed down the planned use for the display.

4. Which Touch Features Are Required?

You should know about users’ preferences; for example, will users only need to select single inputs with one finger on your device?

If Yes, a standard 4-wire resistive touchscreen is perhaps a perfect option for them. A 4-wire resistive touchscreen’s simple construction handles this without adding much cost. However, if users need to zoom, scroll, or activate features with multiple touchpoints, that will narrow the selection to screens with multi-touch functionality, such as a projected capacitive or a resistive multi-touch screen.

5. How Will The Touchscreen Be Activated?

Given how touchscreens register inputs, activating the screen is an important consideration.

Will the user wear gloves or another object to touch the screen? If so, specific types of touchscreens are necessary to register those inputs. While the sensitivity of a projected capacitive touchscreen can be adjusted to note certain styluses and gloves, the object used must be able to disrupt the capacitive field. A resistive touchscreen is optimal for applications where other input devices can register inputs from nearly any object.

6. What Is The Environment To Use Touchscreen?

Where the touchscreen will activate is another essential factor to consider.

Is it subject to drastic cleaning agents in a medical setting?

Will it be used in an industrial environment to repeat impacts?

PCAP technology is ideal if durability is a vital concern, given that damage to the cover glass does not change its ability to register inputs correctly. Resistive screens meet performance requirements for softer environments without adding additional cost.

7. What Is The Price Point?

Resistive touchscreens still tend to be cheaper, as PCAP touchscreens technology becomes more popular and its cost decreases. If you are looking for a touchscreen for a game, toy, or other cheap application, a simple 4-wire resistive touchscreen may add unnecessary cost to the device. However, a projected capacitive screen will be worth the additional cost in the case of a computer, smartphone, or other costly application that requires a high-end look.

8. How Many Actuations Does The Touchscreen Require To Handle?

Different touchscreen constructions are ranked for different numbers of actuations. A 4-wire or 8-wire resistive touchscreen will be optimal for a device that needs to remain accurate only for a few thousand actuations. In contrast, if the device will require significantly more usage, a 5-wire touchscreen is a better choice. However, a projected capacitive screen would be ideal if a display handles millions of actuations, as it can maintain its accuracy over infinite inputs.
